Have at least 2GB of available hard disk space
Do I need two network cards to block Internet traffic?
Not at all. If LittleBrother Pro can "see" the network packets,
it can also "cancel" them so that they never reach the
destination.
How can LittleBrother track Internet/Intranet
traffic?
LittleBrother inspects all the traffic in the Local Area Network (LAN) and
analyzes/reports all connections being made with local computers or
Internet sites.
Can I monitor multiple IP subnets with
LittleBrother?
Of course! Specify additional subnets in LittleBrother Administrator under
Tools->Network->Advanced (one entry per subnet), and LittleBrother
will start collecting data from them. In case of multiple IP subnets, you
will want to have LittleBrother installed on the segment nearest to the
Internet router, because it is the most favorable location for monitoring
Internet traffic.
How much disk space does LittleBrother require?
The LittleBrother program takes about 50MB of disk space after
installation. Once installed, you can expect approximately 10KB of data
per user per day.So for 100 users at 10KB per day for 30 days, that equals
300MB of disk space needed for storage. A 2GB hard drive should be fine
for most networks.
Which CPU does LittleBrother require?
It really depends on the combination of your network size, the network
load, and number of applications concurrently running on the same
computer. Minimally we require a Pentium 200 with 64MB RAM. We recommend a
Pentium 266 with 128MB RAM. For larger networks, we recommend a more
powerful processor.
How does LittleBrother know whether the Internet
access is productive or not?
LittleBrother comes with a database that categorizes the most popular
Internet sites. Each category is then rated whether it is productive,
unproductive, or neutral. By using this information and inspecting which
sites users connect to, LittleBrother can determine whether the Internet
traffic is productive.
Who determines the site category?
LittleBrother has full time employees who seek out the newest most popular
sites and categorize them.
Can I change the Category rating?
Yes. You can always change the rating on each category. You can do this by
going to Tools->Rating.
Can I get an update of the category database?
Yes. The price of LittleBrother includes 30 of free category updates. The
registered user can download the latest Category database from Database
Updates Page. Note that LittleBrother pricing also includes 30 days of
free upgrades of the LittleBrother software.
Does the user know he/she is being blocked by
LittleBrother?
Yes. LittleBrother automatically sends a message that tells the user he/she
is being blocked by LittleBrother.
I am not a network/Internet expert. Can I still use
LittleBrother?
Yes. LittleBrother was designed for everyone, including non-technical users,
from the beginning. It is easy to use and understand. Our engineers have
gone through a series of reviews to make sure that anyone familiar with
Windows can use and understand LittleBrother.
Can LittleBrother track Internet access via a modem?
No. Since the Internet traffic will directly go from the computer through
the telephone wire and bypass the Local Area Network (LAN), LittleBrother
cannot track this traffic. Again, LittleBrother can only track the traffic
that is going through the LAN.
I want to restrict access to LittleBrother data. Can
anyone view it?
LittleBrother allows you to have a password on its database. Therefore, even
though other people can get ahold of your LittleBrother database (for
example, from a backup tape), without knowing the password, they cannot use
the database.
I heard that switching hubs make network monitoring
very difficult, if not impossible. Can I still make LittleBrother work?
Yes, although minor changes in your network configuration may be necessary
in order for LittleBrother to monitor signals properly. Please refer to
Switching Hub Recommendations in the Troubleshooting section of your manual,
or refer to Configuration Tips in Help.
I have a Cabletron Hub, will LittleBrother work?
Several manufacturers (notably Cabletron) have produced hubs with
configurable "channels" which allow administrator to restrict
propagation of network traffic between channels (partial switching). A
workaround is to have the monitoring workstation plugged into the same
channel as the Internet router, which can be achieved by simply re-plugging
the network cable or reconfiguring the channels layout.
What are the approved TokenRing cards for
LittleBrother?
LittleBrother has been verified to work with the following adapters/configurations:
- Madge Smart 16/4 ISA PnP Ringnode
For Windows 95, you have to set the adapter for promiscuous mode.
See topic Promiscuous mode on Madge Token Ring adapters.
- IBM Dual Auto LAN Streamer PCI(Windows NT 4.0)
- Micro Channel (Windows NT4)
- Proteon 1690 (Windows95)
- IBM reports that promiscuous mode is supported on its PCI cards, but
not on their ISA cards.
