LittleBrother reports failure to start driver.
This occurs when the driver was not able to correctly link to the network driver. First of all, be sure to restart your system after installing LittleBrother. If you continue to have this problem, please follow the instructions below to allow us to look into the problem.

  1. Open the system event viewer.
  2. Select menu item "Log\System".
  3. Select menu item "Log\Save As" to save the event log into a file.
  4. Specify a unique file name for the event log file.
  5. Email the saved event log file to support@littlebrother.com

Why can't I see any traffic?
There can be several reasons.

  1. LittleBrother is not running. In a standalone installation, the GUI must be running in order to see traffic being generated. In client/server installations, ensure that the service has started.
  2. There really is no Internet traffic. You should try to include all local network traffic (see below for detail instructions).
  3. Misconfigured IP address. You should bring up the IP Configuration Dialog to ensure you have the correct IP address and subnet mask.
  4. Uncertified proxy server. You may be using an uncertified proxy server. Contact LittleBrother Software for the updated list of certified proxy servers.
  5. Switching Hub. You may be using switching hubs in your network. In this case, you may have to talk to your network manager to ask him/her to reconfigure your switching hub to allow other users' computer traffic to pass by. See below for more information.
  6. LittleBrother sometimes binds itself to another network adapter specified in your Network Properties window. Here is what you can do to fix this:
    • RIGHT mouse click on "My Computer", select Properties.
    • Click on tab "Device Manager."
    • (likely*) One of the devices will be visible as malfunctioning, with small red exclamation mark on top of it.
    • Remove this extra driver which has no associated device.
    • Reboot the computer.

* If the malfunctioning driver is not visible, open the "Network Adapters" item in the devices tree and check for duplicate drivers; only one driver should be listed, if your computer has one network card.

To include all other local network traffic:
Press the Configure button to bring up the Configuration dialog. Uncheck the "Exclude Intranet" checkbox.

Why can I only see my own computer traffic, not others?
If you have left LB running for a while (a few days) and still only see your own computer traffic, you are very likely running in a switching hub environment. In this case, you have to talk to your network manager to ask him/her to reconfigure your switching hub to allow other computer traffic to pass by.
You may be running a Dynamic IP addressing scheme. You need to go to LittleBrother Administrator->Tools->Network Config and enter the LittleBrother machine's current IP address and subnet mask. Then stop and restart LittleBrother.

Why can't I see a particular user?
First, you have to let LB run for enough time to detect most of the users in your network. LB will only display the detected users. LB can only detect those logged-in users that are using the network or Internet in the same network segment during the discovery period. For those users that are not logged in to use the network/Internet, LB will not be able to know of such a user's existence.

Second, if the user is not in the same segment as yours, and LB is not configured to monitor traffic from that segment, and the other users' traffic from that segment does not run through your machine, LittleBrother will not see such a user.

Third, you may not be able to see all the users because of a license restriction; see below.
Note: a network segment is a physical boundary that separates network users into physical groups.

Why can't I see the full user name?
LittleBrother will try to identify users and machines in a format which is as easy to understand as possible. However, in some cases LittleBrother will be unable to determine the full user name or machine name, and will use the Internet Address (IP) and/or Machine Address (MAC) instead. If you are running a NetWare network we recommend that you use the Novell NetWare Client 32 on the machine that is running LittleBrother. This will allow LittleBrother to query login information that is not supported by the Microsoft NetWare Client. On Microsoft networks, LittleBrother will search for the User and Machine names using NetBIOS and the Domain Name System (DNS). If LittleBrother cannot find the Machine name, it will report its address instead.

No blocking notification message sent to the user's workstation. I can only receive the blocking message on some computers when I try to access the restricted site. Why is that?
Depending on the OS environment of the computer, some computers will always receive the message, some need to run an additional utility from the OS.
If the computer is running Windows NT 3.51/4.0 (both workstation and server), it should always receive the message.
If the computer is running Windows 95/3.1x.

  • Case 1. Without the Novell NetWare Client - You have to run winpopup to receive the message.
  • Case 2. With the Novell NetWare Client - Make sure to select the option in the NetWare Client configuration screen to allow the broadcast message and run nwpopup.

We recommend to put the winpopup or nwpopup into the startup group. Winpopup is a Microsoft utility that comes with every Windows 95/3.1x. Nwpopup is a utility that comes with the Novell NetWare Client for Windows.

When I connect to a Web site, LittleBrother shows a connection to a local machine or company gateway instead.
Check to see if you have a proxy server set up. LittleBrother detects the actual destination of the network traffic. When you use a proxy server, you are actually sending your request directly to the proxy server, and the proxy server gets any information it needs from the Web site.

We have a lot of users using Internet. Why does LittleBrother always show only a limited number(10/25/50 etc.) of users?
You may have more users in your network than specified on your license. LittleBrother will only sum up to the number of licensed users. To fix this problem, you can upgrade your license. You can also use the Node Filter option to filter out users you don't want to see.

Why does LittleBrother only show a few users in the network and I have enough license for all my users?
On the main view of LittleBrother, by default it is configured to show only active Internet users for the past hour. For other users that are not using the Internet but may be using the Intranet (LAN), LittleBrother will not show them by default. To see all active users in the network, you can reconfigure the main view option.

  1. Click on the "Configure" button on the main view.
  2. Uncheck the "Exclude Intranet" option.

LittleBrother shows that I went to playboy.com for 10 minutes but I swear I only went there for a minute. Why is that?
LittleBrother only estimates the time usage; it does not actually measure how long the connection took. The reason is that the user can always spend more time reading the material than it actually takes to transmit them. LittleBrother can only try its best to do an educated estimate.

LittleBrother reports that I went to 10 different sites and stayed there 10 minutes each in the last hour. The math does not add up. According to LittleBrother, there is 100 minutes in an hour. Why is that?
See the answer from the previous question.

Some sites that I see are not categorized. How do I add them in?
LittleBrother includes a site database that is constantly updated by full time employees. However, you may still see that some sites are not categorized. To do this, simply double click on the site's IP address or name. Choose a category, and/or rename the site if you want.

Will LittleBrother have trouble detecting users on a Switching Hub network?

  • Many makers of switching hubs anticipated the need for monitoring and provided VLAN port which shows all available traffic.
  • Alternatively, some switching hubs can be configured to disable switching on any given port and turn it into a VLAN port.
  • If the hardware provides no monitoring aids, all Internet traffic can still be monitored by tapping into a connection between Internet router and the hub. On 10BASE2 networks, this takes a T-connector. On 10BASE-T networks, one will need an inexpensive 3-port hub.

LittleBrother is not showing the sites users are going to in the main user view/report.
LB comes configured in a way that speeds up reporting capabilities by not showing the top site for each user in the main user view. However, you can change this by simply clicking on the "Configure" button at the bottom of the main report, and then checking the "Show Main Destination" box. This will show the site a user was at, or which site the user stayed the longest, in the main user screen. This is also configurable when you go to do a Top Talker or Top Sites report.

When I return in the morning, I don't see any users in the main report. Why?
First of all, be sure that LittleBrother has been running for at least a few minutes in order for it to detect users on your network. Sometimes, you may notice that users "drop off" after LB has been running for a while. In reality, the main report shows the last hour's worth of information. So, if no one's been using the Internet in the past hour, you aren't going to see any information.

When I run a User Detail or Site Detail report, not all the information is there.
These reports run off of the last report generated, or if no report is available, it will run off of the main view.

Some users on my network are being displayed as sites. Why is this?
If LittleBrother detects your computer connecting to other computers, even though they are on your network, it will register them as remote sites. If this is occurring, you may need to configure LB to recognize different subnets within your network. This can be done by going to the Tools->Network->Advanced dialog.

What are the approved TokenRing cards for LittleBrother?
LittleBrother has been verified to work with the following adapters/configurations:

  • Madge Smart 16/4 ISA PnP Ringnode
For Windows 95, you have to set the adapter for promiscuous mode.
See topic Promiscuous mode on Madge Token Ring adapters.
  • IBM Dual Auto LAN Streamer PCI (Windows NT 4.0)
  • Micro Channel (Windows NT4)
  • Proteon 1690 (Windows95)
  • IBM reports that promiscuous mode is supported on its PCI cards, but not on their ISA cards.

Why does the total time spent not agree in different reports?
It is because users can access many different Internet sites at the same time.
For example, John can do 5 different things in the Internet at the same time. He brings up 5 copies of the Web browser to do the following:

  1. Download the latest Web browser from www.Netscape.com
  2. Download the latest Windows 95 patch from www.Microsoft.com
  3. Downdload the latest stock quotes from www.StockQuote.com
  4. Chat with a friend in UK (www.TheCompany.com.uk)
  5. Check the latest news from www.CNN.com

And John spends 60 minutes on each single task.

The top talker report will show John spent a total of 60 minutes. The user detail report will show John spent a combined total of 300 minutes (5 sites and each site John spent 60 minutes). Both are correct. John really only spent his 60 minutes doing all these tasks, and it shows in the top talker report. However, if you look at the user detail report, he also did spend 60 minutes on each single site. But in here, you cannot conclude that John spent a total of 300 minutes by adding time spent from each site. Remember John can multitask.

Why do my group settings keep changing after I save them?
Check in Help/About... for your build # of LittleBrother. If it is #169 or earlier than your version of LittleBrother has a bug which causes it to reset the group settings during a standard database reset. To fix this you need to upgrade your version of LittleBrother. You can check at www.littlebrother.com/software/latest for the latest setup program.

When I open LittleBrother I get a message that the license expired, but I know it hasn't.
This doesn't happen as often anymore since LittleBrother v3.2 but may affect users with LB v3.1. Normally the problem occurs when a user converts a demo copy of LittleBrother to a full retail by simply upgrading the license in the License Upgrade utility of LittleBrother. After several months of regular operation, LittleBrother suddenly quits working saying the license is expired. At this point, you need to uninstall/reinstall LittleBrother. Please contact technical support before attempting to do this on your own so as not to lose your settings or reporting capabilities.

Why aren't the user names changing even though different people log in at the same computer?
That's right, John sits down at Computer1 and generates traffic, and then leaves, and when Joe comes along and generates traffic, it gets logged to John. The name resolution works better LittleBrother v3.2 which cab be downloaded from www.littlebrother.com/software/latest. When you run the setup program, please make sure to make a backup copy of your Kansmen folder first in case you have any problems during the setup. There is also a setting you can use to control the time that LittleBrother queries for names. The default is to check hourly and this can be reduced down to 5 minutes. Open the klbdata.ini file in the Kansmen\LB folder and under [klbdata] make a new entry: UserQueryInterval=300 where 300 is the number of seconds between user name queries. This is the minimum value that you can set.

When I'm building a group, I get a license violation error from LittleBrother
LittleBrother may be complaining about the group size for a legitimate reason. For example if you have a 250 user license and you're trying to create a group with a threshold over the 250 user limit, this error will occur. This error would also occur if you have already created other groups, and this new group you're creating brings the total combined user count in all groups over 250.
However, there was a problem in LB 3.1 where users who were 'Node Filtered' were being counted against the license limit. This was fixed in LB v3.2 and is available at www.littlebrother.com/software/latest. You can install this over your current copy of LittleBrother, but make sure LittleBrother and Apache are not running and make a backup copy of your Kansmen folder just in case.

LittleBrother blocks sites which should not be blocked
This affects users running proxy servers. LittleBrother gets triggered to block a site based on a previous attempt to go to a site which really should get blocked. For example, Joe first goes to www.playboy.com and gets blocked for legitimate reasons, so he decides to get some work done and goes to his company's site instead www.joescompany.com but finds he also gets blocked to this site. What's going on here? LittleBrother will report that Joe attempted to access playboy twice.
The fix: Upgrade LittleBrother to v3.2 which fixes the bug causing the problem. This upgrade is available at www.littlebrother.com/software/latest. You can install this over the top of your current installation, but please make a backup copy of your Kansmen folder first, and make sure LittleBrother and Apache are not running.

Why does LittleBrother 'Contact Server' for so long?
Basically LittleBrother is reading information from several internal database tables which are tremendous in size, these being the user name table, computer name table and site id table. While the user name and computer tables aren't too huge themselves, the site id table is very large. It contains an entry for every site that users in your intranet visit. It keeps this table indefinitely and this table make it possible for LittleBrother to block sites faster. Basically LittleBrother is caching site names so that if users attempt to access the same site multiple times, LB will be able to keep up and block the sites. Each time you load LittleBrother, or when you access blocking, LittleBrother is doing an inventory of the information in these three tables and comparing it to values in the Ratings Database and your own ratings settings to decide how each site should be treated if someone attempts to access one of them.
This is done to make LittleBrother run faster during operation, although it operates more slowly when you're trying to make configuration changes, or when LittleBrother is being loaded/unloaded.
Some suggestions you can try:
Try increasing the virtual memory setting in the OS LittleBrother is running in to 3x the physical memory in the computer (ie if you have 128MB of physical, try setting the virtual memory, pagefile, whatever it may be called, to 384MB minimum).
Try actually increasing the physical RAM in the computer, and upgrading the CPU as this will greatly increase the performance.
As a final suggestion, you can delete this particular site id table in LittleBrother, and regain most of the loading speed it originally started off with. LittleBrother will recreate it as it runs. However, doing this will make reports from before deleting the table impossible to read, so only do this if you don't need the prior reporting.
There are two different ways this data is stored, either in the klbdbase.mdb file, or in the klbdbase.lbs file. If the klbdbase.lbs file is larger than 0k than simply deleting or removing this file and restarting LittleBrother without it will do the trick. If this file is 0k, or doesn't exist, than the table is actually in the klbdbase.mdb file, and the operation is a little trickier and requires Microsoft Access to do it. Call tech support at (408)263-9881 for details.

HTTP Block Message option
This feature will be the standard for blocking in LittleBrother 4.0
For LittleBrother Version 3.2 Build 195, you may choose a HTTP block message.
To do this, go to Start->Run->regedit
From the registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Kansmen->LittleBrother->Setup
Create a new DWORD value: 'SendHttpBlockMessage'
Next you will need to edit the value just created to a value of '1'. Then you will need to restart the computer.

You can redirect blocked user's web browser by going to tools->blocking. Next highlight the rule and select edit. Under the section Message, select custom. In the field below it, enter

Note: Change the www.companywebsite.com to another web site that you wish to redirect blocked users to.
If you experience difficulties with this, please contact technical support.

What is 224.x.x.x traffic I see?
What you are seeing is Multicast traffic. Basically it is Internet garble and can disregard it. To prevent it from showing up, you can filter it out. Go to LittleBrother Administrator Tools->Network Config-> Advanced. Under the IP Address section, add 224.x.x.x and 255.0.0.0 for the subnet mask then click on add. Click on OK and close LittleBrother Administrator. Restart the LittleBrother program then go to Tools->Node Filter and select 224.x.x.x. This will prevent Multicast traffic from appearing.
Note: the 'x' value needs to be replaced with the values appearing in the LittleBrother reports.

I only get user names and no machine names
There is a conflict between the Novell Client32 and the Windows Operating System. You need to remove Client32 from the LittleBrother PC and use the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks.

I keep getting Blue Screen after installing LittleBrother
You may be using a Virtual Ethernet Adapter on the LittleBrother machine. One such example is PGP Net Adapter which encrypts network transmissions. You will need to either uninstall LittleBrother or the Virtual Ethernet Adapter. When you get Blue Screen, reboot the station and choose 'Last Known Good Configuration' then proceed to load the O/S and remove the adapter.

I am having problems with Database Reset
If LittleBrother is installed in Standalone mode, Database Reset will not work. You need to have LittleBrother installed on a NT machine in Client/Server to use the Database Reset option.

I am using Dynamic Addressing and don't see traffic
You need to either assign the LittleBrother a static IP address by reserving an address for LittleBrother to use from your DHCP Scope. Then entering that IP address into the machine.
Alternatively, you can go to start->programs->LittleBrother->LittleBrother Administrator->Tools->Network Config and enter the machine's current IP address and subnet mask.
After making these changes, you will need to reboot the machine.

Does LittleBrother support Windows 2000?
LittleBrother version 4.0 will support Windows 2000.

What does error 109 mean?
This occurs when you have LittleBrother in a Client/Server installation and are stopping the LittleBrother service from Services under Control Panel. This is a normal error that may happen from time to time.

LittleBrother fails to recognize Ethernet Adapter during setup
This usual occurs with some 3Com and Linksys NICs. To correct the problem, do the following:
Go to start->run->regedit. This will put you into the Registry Editor
Next go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\"card name"\Parameters
Add a Dword Value: 'MediaType' then modify the value to: '1'
You will need to restart the LittleBrother machine for the change to take affect.
The card name will generally end with 'x1' (ex: E190x1, LNE100TX1)

Can I start LittleBrother automatically in Windows 9x?
You will need to go to the Registry by clicking on Start->Run and typing in Regedit.
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Current Version\RunServices
Add a String Value: 'LittleBrother' then modify the value to: 'c:\kansmen\lb\klb.exe
Where c:\kansmen\lb is the path to klb.exe. Then reboot the machine.
